ALT-1 Creative Ways to Celebrate Fathers Day

From 3arf

So many families celebrate Father’s Day the same way they approach other holidays. They look back on what was done in the past, and then do the same thing with some minor adjustments so that it will appear more special than it actually is. The problem with this approach is that it doesn’t really achieve anything, such as showing your father that you love and care about him, and want him to feel special on his special day.

There are ways around this, and all they really take are some creative thinking.

One simple but effective thing you might try is instead of buying him a card at Hallmark, make him one instead. Making cards on a computer isn’t that hard, and doesn’t take all that long, but it does give you the opportunity to say the things you want the card to say instead of simply using someone else’s canned words. Also, you can customize your card, with photographs or drawings of things that have some meaning to your father, or maybe even to your family as a whole. Making a card isn’t all that big of a deal, but it might mean something to your father, who can never get enough kind and loving words from those people he most loves in the world.

Another thing you might try is taking him out shopping for something you and he both know he needs or wants, but that he won’t get for himself, and you wouldn’t know how to go about getting it for him yourself. Such things might include new clothes; a particular type of little electronic gadget he’s been talking about; guitar lessons; a book, DVD or movie he’s been wanting to see or have, and/or a certain something that might make his life easier but neither of you know what it is until you see it for yourselves in person.

Something else you might try is planning a day long activity with him. It might be that all he really wants most on father’s day is to spend time with you, his offspring. To make that happen you could buy tickets to a ball game, take a drive out into the country or rent a boat for an outing on a nearby lake. Or maybe you could go golfing with him or take him to a place you and he used to visit when you were little. Or maybe you could take him to visit someone far away that you both care a lot about. The point here is to figure out something that the both of you would like to do, and that lasts for a more than a few minutes and then, to make it happen.

The way to come up with creative ideas for Father’s Day is to think deeply about who your father truly is as a human being, and then think about things that make him happy. After that, all you have to do is put the two together.
