ALT-12 Deciding whether to Give two Weeks Notice or not

From 3arf

When you are going to quit your job, you have to decide whether you are going to give a notice or not. Typically, the standard or notice is two weeks. Whether you give them that big of a notice of not is up to you. Here are some factors that may help you decide before you put it in writing.

First of all, how long have you been with the company? If you just started a job a week ago, a two weeks notice is not necessary. If the job is that bad and you cannot stand it, why would you want to put another two weeks of misery? Plus, if you explain to your employer why this just isn't a good fit for you and the company, most likely they will either make it work, or they will understand. They will not want you there either if you are unhappy because, they know you will not be giving it your best.

If the company relocated you or gave you incentive money to start with the company, you should give at least the two week minimum. This company paid big bucks to get you where you are right now, they should get the respect of a longer notice. They believed in you and thought you were the right person for that job. It will take two weeks or even longer before they will be able to replace a person like you.

You have been with the company for 20 years. Well this is a no brainer. You have to give the company two weeks. You have put in so many years of service, what is two more weeks. You should know in plenty of time of your intentions of leaving that job, so a longer notice is essential. Plus, you will want those two weeks to speak with your HR representative on perhaps your 401K or retirement plan.

The easy way to put it is that the longer you have been with the company, the longer your notice should be. Even if they have made you so upset that you were forced to quit, you should still give proper notice. Think of the things that they have done for you, not why you are mad. Why did you want to work for that company in the first place? All are things to consider before you throw in the towel and quit.
