2010 Vw Jetta Tdi
(Starting at $22,270)What is the best part of the VW Jetta TDI turbodiesel besides the fact that you get 30 city/41 highway out of a tank of fuel? Well, if history serves as any guide, your TDI will probably lose little or none of the value of its original MSRP. It's true. Older, smokier and less powerful TDIs still sell for prices near their MSRPs even with astronomical mileages. Imagine what would happen if the price of regular gas skyrocketed again. You might make a profit off of a 3 year old Jetta TDI!Why is there this feverish cultism surrounding Volkswagen and its TDI models in this country? Well once you get used to going 500 plus miles on a tank and enjoying the unique surge of torque any diesel engine affords the driver you sort of get addicted. Yes, instead of normal car guys or gals who are called petrolheads these people are called dervheads. (Derv is slang for diesel. Just so you know this after you get invited to your first secret TDI meeting/bake sale to save the whales. The 2010 VW Jetta TDI comes with a 2.0 liter turbocharged diesel engine with 140 horsepower and 236 pound feet of torque (that's more than in the GTI). While 140 may sound average for a subcompact it is the huge torque wave that you feel pushing you back into the seat as you accelerate in the TDI. Are you worried that your VW TDI will clatter as loudly as your neighbor's Ford Super Duty Diesel Pickup? Not a chance. The turbodiesel engine design in the VW is far more advanced, quiet and clean than old, smelly pickup diesels. The VW unit is so clean it doesn't even need special urea injection (like competitors at Mercedes, BMW and Audi do) to keep the TDI clean enough even for the stringent air quality restrictions in states like California. There is an interesting sound to the diesel but it is never loud and actually pushes you to want to rev the engine further. That is not how diesels used to be.The VW Jetta TDI is available with manual transmission or VW's super-intelligent twin clutch automatic which can shift faster than any human. So there is no shame in getting your diesel in an automatic as the torque is available practically off of idle. The Jetta TDI is available in either sedan or more utilitarian Sportwagen forms.
