The Ford Mustang and the Chevrolet Camaro have been household names since the 60’s and 70’s, so everyone was anxious to see what the new versions look like and how they compare.Muscle car enthusiasts may initially cringe at the fact that these new versions are V-6. Back in the good old days, girls drove a car with a V-6, but it’s a new day.From all accounts, both cars are pretty much a hit, both in looks and in performance, however, there are differences.The Ford Mustang has always been popular, and the fact that over nine million have been sold through the years is a pretty good indication of that. The new version, while it still has the Mustang feel and look, has some new lines, but retains a retro look. The interior has been updated as well, but the reactions to the change have been positive.The Camaro exterior has changed, but while it may not be automatically recognized as a Camaro, it is still a good looking car. The interior, according to people who have checked it out, is less impressive than the Mustang, lacking a certain classic flair.Both the Mustang and Camaro are front engine, rear wheel drive, four seat coupes. The Mustang comes in a convertible, and although a convertible in the Camaro isn’t available yet, there is talk of one in the future.Both cars are V-6, but there are differences in performance.The Camaro LS and LT use the 3.6-liter direct-injected V-6. It produces 304 horsepower and gets 29 mpg highway and 17mpg city for the manual and 18 mpg for the automatic. According to some, it feels like a V-8The Mustang, on the other hand, has a 4.0 liter engine and produces 210 horsepower. Mileage for the Mustang is 18 mpg city, and 26 mpg highway with the manual, and, 16 and 24 for the automatic.Price wise, the new Ford Mustang starts at $21,845 and the Chevrolet Camaro, at $22,995. Of course, these are the base models.A Ford Mustang convertible GT Convertible in the Premium model will up the cost to the neighborhood of $36,845, and, the Chevy V-8 starts at $30, 995.Mustang enthusiasts might not mind paying for the little extras that can also jack up the cost such as a glass roof, special electronics package, navigational system, specialty paint and even racing stripes.Overall the opinion seems to be that the Camaro leads between the two in performance, but the Ford Mustang is ahead in looks, and overall value.
