2009 Skyline Gt r Review
The long awaited Nissan GT-R has arrived. This car has been coveted by car enthusiasts in America for generations. This GT-R, while having the supercar status that it has, is much cheaper than much of its competition. This car is super fast, however it is a bit different than previous years. Is it for the better? We’ll let you decide.
Enter the 2009 Nissan GT-R, the world’s foremost supercar. This car was named “Car of the Year” by Motor Trend Magazine as well as “Automobile of the Year” by Automobile Magazine. Nissan promised that they would deliver the fastest production car ever built, and they delivered. According to Edmunds, It was the fastest car they had ever driven. This car can go from 0-60 mph in 3.3 seconds, and runs the quarter mile in 11.6 seconds at 120 mph!
The biggest change comes in the form of a larger engine. Previously the GT-R came with a twin turbo 2.6 liter inline 6 cylinder which produces roughly 277 horsepower and 293 pound feet of torque (although it seems as if this is underrated). The 2009 and newer GT-R’s come with a twin turbo 3.8 liter V6 that churns out an amazing 480 horsepower and 430 pound feet of torque. Of course this is stock, out of the factory and there is always room for more power.
Another change came to the transmission. The previous year GT-R’s came with either a 5 or 6 speed manual transmission, with each passing generation the transmission got better. This generation is no exception. Nissan developed a transmission with a dual clutch and 3 driver selected options. The options are:
The driver can also select whether he/she wants to have a fully automatic or manual transmission. This is great for those stuck in traffic. The shifter is on the steering wheel though, and could take some getting used to.
The engine and transmission are great, but if you can’t get the power to the tires what is the point? This is where Nissan decided to leave some things the same. The ATTESA-ETS all wheel drive system remains in play. Why change something that works so well? This system monitors the motion of the wheels, and when slippage is detected power is automatically distributed to the front wheels. The driver gets to select how much power is to be sent up front, if at all.
The suspension of the GT-R is also state of the art. They use a 4 wheel independent suspension that is electronically controlled for maximum performance, and once again, the settings are able to be controlled by the driver.
The interior of this car is the epitome of comfort. The heated leather front seats wrap around the driver like a glove and move in 8 different directions. All of the controls are well within reach of the driver for ease of use.
This is a beautiful car inside and out. While some things change, some remain the same. All of the changes made where for the better in our opinion. This car is super fast, and while it is about $70,000 for one of these machines, it is well worth it since it puts the more expensive competition to shame.
