Writing a Successful Cv
When it comes to looking for work the CV is the most important thing you have at your disposal. The CV is what the potential employer sees first. This is the employer’s introduction to you. The CV is the only instrument that will get you granted an interview.
Therefore nothing can be more important than getting your CV just right. How can onewrite a winning CV?
Whilst accepting that writing a winning CV is quite subjective, one CV might impress one employer and not another. However, there are things you can do to make your CV stand out.
First a neat hand written CV is better than a printed one. Make sure there are no long gaps between your employment histories. If there are employment gaps, find something to fill in the glaring empty space. If on sabbatical say so. If you were doing voluntary work put this down.
Don’t forget to state your hobbies. One might think this is beside the point but it tells the employer something about you. It gives an employer a feel for the kind of person you are. Don’t state watching television as this is hardly going to impress. Everyone has hobbies and interests just think hard about what yours are.
State all your voluntary and unpaid work this is good for telling your potential employer how industrious you are. If you have a second language, state it on your CV. You don’t need to be fluent to put down a language so long as you have a reasonable understanding of the language. Second languages impress employers as English speakers are rather lacking in learning languages and it will set you apart.
When writing down your previous employment state your position and responsibilities. In addition state you reason for leaving. If you were let go, it is best to put redundancy. Also give a contact name if possible or the company’s address and telephone number.
Lastly, as CV’s are is easy to print off, you can personalise it and state why you want the position offered. Also state why you feel you are right for this position and state where your experience will benefit the employer. Don’t make these comment too long-winded but succinct and to the point. However, having said that don’t miss relevant experience.
Lastly your CV should look neat and tidy. It should be a busy document to attract the eye of the potential employer. All the important facts about you should be clear to see and stand out.
