Why you should Avoid Lying on your Resume Cv Curriculum Vitae
Your resume (or CV curriculum vitae in Europe) is an indicator of who you are. It covers your educational, workplace, and personal interests. In essence your resume is your life on paper. An employer will want to invite you to an interview, providing you are the type of candidate they are looking for because of your resume. Lying therefore can be a waste of yours and your employer’s time when it is discovered to be fictional.
During any interview you need to be confident. The ability to answer questions accurately relating to your experience is paramount. If your resume is full of waffle, you will not be able to relate real-life experiences with the questions. A clever interviewer will be able to tell by your body language, that you are both uncomfortable, and worse still that you are lying.
The need to be honest opens the doorway to effective communication. Your ability to communicate will be reduced if you are basing your resume on fiction rather than fact. Your resume will be checked if you are successful in securing the job, and then your employer will have to act on the disinformation you have provided. This can result in dismissal.
It is important to understand that your resume should not focus on negativity. If you have had a period out of work, then you need to explain why. For example you could have been helping care for a relative, or building up an electronic business such as eBay, or even volunteer work. Say and write this as a positive ability. These positive abilities are people business skills regardless of perception. Many employers look for such additional skills, you just need to rephrase this part of your resume so it looks positive.
An employer will want to choose a person for who they are. Is it not better to be employed by a company where you know they want the real you or the imaginary you? Your confidence and ability to perform well in your job will be enhanced by the knowledge that you were chosen because of the real you.
Even if you manage to secure a job by lying on your resume, what happens when you understand that you can’t physically do the work as you do not have the necessary skills? Your employer will then have to seek another worker at additional expense and more time, and you will have to find another job. But of course the dilemma is that now you can’t add the last job because it was too short and had a negative ending?
Your resume or CV is a reflection of you as a person. It should be accurate and truthful. If it needs to be improved and polished then this is the best option. Focus on the truth and avoid lying so you will have a true reflection of yourself as an individual. Turn the negatives into positives and you will have a strong resume and be a stronger person.
