Why bother making New Year resolutions that will not be kept?

From 3arf

Every year many people decide to make resolutions on January 1st. Every year, halfof those people fail with their resolutions. Have you ever wondered why that may be?  Here we will look at several different reasons why it might not be such a good idea.

The person making the resolution is probably not fully emotionally invested in theresolution.  You have to really, really want to do it with all of your being. You must be dedicated and do whatever it takes to achieve that goal. Most people are invested for that first month, but it goes downhill from there. When the going gets tough, the tough need to get going.

You need to raise your personal standards. There are people who get up at the crack of dawn to jog or go to the gym. If that's not you, you need to hold yourself to that standard too if you want to be able to make a change. On average it takes 21-66 days to form a dailyhabit.

People refuse to burn their bridges and move on. You can't have a crutch around or you're setting yourself up for failure. If you lose weight, get rid of your fat clothes! You may be financially unable to purchase a second whole new wardrobe, how's that for motivation? If you vow to quit smoking, get rid of all the cigarettes, ashtrays, and lighters.  Keeping these things around makes it easier to go back to the old habits.  As the saying goes, old habits die hard.

Resolution makers don't have strong enough convictions to make it stick. You need that strong emotional desire to continue on your desired path.

People tend to make excuses for their failure. If they are overweight they tell themselves that they are big boned. This is what they have always believed and therefore they are unable to change.

Depression makes you want to give up.  Say you want to lose 20 pounds before swimsuit season.  But, you only lose half the weight.  Do you feel good about what you have accomplished? Probably not, most people think they haven't made enough progress.  You worked your butt off (no pun intended), but didn't get to where you wanted to be, so you feel like a failure.

The number one reason not to make a resolution is because you probably made the same exact resolution as lastyearand didn't follow through then.  What's going to change this year?

If you do want to succeed look over your resolution(s) and pick out your weaknesses.  Make sure to be honest with yourself during this process.  Then do everything you can to make this a positive and lasting change.
