Why Helmets are Needed – Agree
So, you bought your self a fancy new motorcycle have you? Your all ready to hit the pavement, and see what she can do? Before you even shift in to first gear, maybe you should consider if you want to be able to walk, or even move your head the rest of your life. It is common knowledge that beginner motorcyclists have the highest crash rating, but don't let the statistics put you more experienced riders put your self in a safe state of mind. We are all at risk, the amount of risk does not negate that fact that there is a risk. Yes, a beginning rider may have a higher chance of wreaking his bike due to his limited experience, but when your riding along, and a car collides with you from nowhere, experience won't save you. The more experienced driver may know what position to stay in at what times, and how to remove themselves as far as they can from dangers, but all it takes is one reckless driver not watching their surroundings to put a biker in his casket. There are things that no rider can avoid, and should be equipped to survive, not look good.
More to the point, I may sound like I am just trying to balance sides, but I know from personal experience that protective gear can save your life. I wreaked my own bike, not so long ago, and the only thing that is allowing me to move was my helmet. I admit, I was a fairly new rider at the time, and may have been able to avoid the crash if I was had more experience, but the results speak for themselves. I went around a turn to find a construction site, that had no prior warnings to the construction, and hit a patch of gravel that was thrown in front of my bike. I managed to regain control only to have it taken away from me, by a horizontal bar. I went into a high skid and was thrown into a wall, and my bike came in behind me and pinned my head and shoulder into the wall being build. My shoulder was safe due to the jacket I had on keeping all the scrapes of metal from me, and my life was saved thanks to my helmet. I was only going 35, but a 350 pound bike(Ninja EX250) hitting a head pressed against a wall would not have ended with me walking away, or even breathing. Thankfully, I had my helmet on, and the only damage was a broken helmet, torn jacket and a scratched bike, and was able to walk the last 23 feet to my destination. I could see my destination as I was pinned upside down trying to push the bike away.
I believe all bikers should wear some type of helmet, even the open helmets are better then no helmet. I am glad that I wore mine, and I am even more glad that I know my father, who drives one of them big V-Dub Harley's wears his as well. He would be glad to hear I was wearing mine in my crash.. if he knew I crashed. Wearing my helmet, saved my life, and allowed me to not have to tell him anything about it. No need to worry a old man, now is there?
On a final note, I think full face helmets just make you look cooler when riding, especially those wearing them on a sports bike.
