What to do when you don’t like your Boss
It is not pleasant to have a mean boss, but you do not usually choose your supervisors. Although you may not be able to change the fact that he or she is mean, you can change how you deal with it, and thus how much it affects you. There are various strategies that can create the best situation.
First, consider your attitude when dealing with your boss. It is very easy to take everything personally and get upset every time he or she says a mean thing. Instead of doing this, which will only serve to make you feel bad, you should try to let his or her rude moments just “roll off your back.” Try not to think about it. Ignore the mean things that he or she says. Some people just like saying mean things or don’t care, but that doesn’t mean you have to care either. This is not someone whose opinion you value. Adjust your attitude, and you may find that things seem a lot better.
You may also be able to stay away from your boss. Of course do not do this to the extent that it affects your job, however, there may be times when you can stay away. You may also be able to deal with things in a less personal matter. For instance, instead of visiting, you could call. Likewise, instead of calling, you could email.
You can also try to stay in your boss’ good graces and avoid the brunt of his or her mean attitude. You can try to do a very good job and not do things that you know bother him or her. Make sure to be on time, for instance.
According toForbes, you might want to try to find some new relationships so that you do not rely on your boss as much. Perhaps you can find someone else in the company who can help you like your boss can. There may be a different superior that you can go to who would work.
If things are very bad, there may be things that you can do. In some extreme cases, there may be someone even higher you can go to. For instance, you may be able to go to a higher boss. You have to be very careful when doing this because you do not want it to backfire and cost you your job. You may be able to do so anonymously, but you never know when it could get back to you. Obviously if it is driving you crazy, you could always consider moving to a different department or even a different job but make sure you can get something first.
According to Forbes, you may be able to change bosses but in other cases you might have to leave the company as a whole. This may especially be the case if the boss has a lot of clout in the company or is very well liked by others. You don’t want to quit and then not be able to get another job. Otherwise try the above measures to help you deal with a mean boss.
