What to do if another Driver is following too Closely

From 3arf

So you are driving down the road, and all of a sudden you are being followed by another car. You are feeling a little anxious as this other driver is almost on your bumper, and you don't know what to do. You do have some options, and how you deal with it depends on how comfortable you are taking any one of these options. Here is what you can do if you are being followed too closely by another driver.

The first thing that you have to do if you are being followed to closely is to determine whether or not it is your fault that you are being followed so closely by the other driver. Sometimes you see a car right behind you, and you suddenly realize that you are doing five miles an hour under the speed limit. In that case all you have to do is speed up and keep up with the flow of traffic.

However, if you are doing the speed limit, or going above the speed limit, and someone is still following you too closely, you have other options as to what you want to do. You could either speed up even more, or you could just switch lanes. If you are on a one lane road, you can just pull over, and let the other driver pass you by.

The last thing you want to do is potentially make another driver angry, and have a situation get escalated. If someone is speeding, and following too closely they might be in a hurry. They might be upset that you aren't going as fast as they want, so you might want to just get out of the way. It is sort of like golf, where sometimes you just let the faster people play through so to speak.

Besides, there could be a valid reason why someone would be following so closely. Maybe they are in a hurry, maybe they have a wife giving labor, and they need to get to the hospital ASAP. Maybe there is some other emergency, and they just need to get where they are going as fast as possible. Again, just pull over if you don't feel comfortable going faster for them.

It can be a little nerve racking for some people to look up and see a car following them so closely. While it is never fun, there are things you can do to get an aggressive driver off your back. If you just use a little common sense, your problem can be gone as fast as it arrived behind you.
