What to Donate for a Thanksgiving Basket

From 3arf

Every year, in late October to mid-November, organizations like the Boy Scouts, Pathfinders and churches run food drives. The donated food is used to make Thanksgiving food baskets for families whose holiday meal depends on them. Many people just throw in any can of food they find. This year, think about what you want to give and help a family have a truly blessed Thanksgiving meal.

Think tradition. Families that need extra help during the holidays still enjoy traditional holiday meals. Think about the food that you enjoy and know that they would probably enjoy the same thing. Most contributions should be non-perishable foods. Some organizations have refrigerator and freezer capabilities that can handle turkeys, cranberries and other items that need cool storage. A better plan, however, is to donate cash for the purchase of perishable items.

Cans of products like pumpkin, black olives and various vegetables, like corn and green beans, are great choices. Cans of mushroom or onion soup can be used in casseroles. Families receiving food baskets will know the food is safe because it is sealed and there is a date on the can. Canned goods will last a long time on the shelf.

Packaged food also have a long shelf life. Traditional products like, packages of products like mashed potatoes, biscuits stuffing will be used to make a tasty Thanksgiving meal. Powdered milk is also an excellent additional because it requires no special storage, can be used to make the mashed potatoes richer tasting and will last a long time.

Sugar and brown sugar, baking soda and baking powder, salt, pepper and other condiments may be a welcome addition to a family's Thanksgiving pantry. Flour, shortening and other baking products will also help complete a wonderful meal.

Fresh, non-perishable foods are great additions to any food drive contribution. Sweet potatoes and yams are both holiday favorites that have a shelf life. Consider adding onions, garlic and squash.

Think about adding a few treats. Muffin and cupcakes mixes, candy and other treats help make the day special for the kids too.

Outside of perishable items, almost anything can be added for a Thanksgiving basket but it is fun to try to provide someone with a traditional meal. Give your donation some thought this year and helped someone have a special day that is lacking nothing when it comes to the food on the Thanksgiving table.
