Most men are not very good at shopping, so they usually end up buying useless, or even worse, inappropriate things. Things can get even more complicated when it comes to gifts for their wives, especially during Christmas. In order for men to understand what are the best gifts to buy for their wives, it might help them to know what they shouldn't buy.

Weight scale
A weight scale is one of the worst gifts you can possibly give your wife. No woman feels really comfortable with her weight. A thin woman would be tempted to check her weight on a daily basis, reaching a point of obsession. A fat woman would probably feel insulted, as she would interpret such a gesture as a hint that she should lose weight fast. Gradually, she would probably start feeling totally unattractive. Especially during Christmas, when many self-esteem issues tend to come to the surface, such a gift should not be chosen.
Self-help books
Wanting to help your wife boost her self-esteem, believe more in herself, get over her depression, and resolve childhood issues does not mean that you should give her self-help books. No woman wants to be told to her face that she has issues and needs some kind of psychological help. Even if these self-help books are really good, even if you try to talk gently to your wife about it, in all probability she will feel insulted and will refuse to read them. If your wife really wants to read some of these books, she will look for them on her own, without your interference.
Lingerie
The kind of lingerie that a man likes his wife to wear is not necessarily what his wife also likes, or what really fits with her style or her body type. A wrong choice of lingerie may make your wife feel extremely uncomfortable, even embarrassed. It is best to let her make that choice all by herself. If she asks for your opinion, simply give her some general suggestions and nothing more than that.
Cosmetics
Unless you know exactly the cosmetics your wife uses, it is best not to buy her any. It is very easy to make the wrong choice, when you are not familiar with the whole concept. Sometimes, you can even put your wife in an extremely difficult position ( for example, by accidentally choosing an anti-wrinkle face cream for her when she does not really need one).
If you do not buy any of the above gifts for your wife, especially during Christmas, when emotions run high, you will have nothing to worry about.
