What it Takes to be a Nurse

From 3arf

Nurses are desperately needed in every area these days. People are growing older and getting sicker and there just aren't enough nurses to go around. Nursing is an overworked, underpaid profession that requires a lot of dedication for the job. It takes a special person to be a nurse and certain "keys to success" to make it in the nursing profession. Below are some of the values I believe you should have as a nurse.

Nursing requires a very special kind of person. One that is caring and kind and can also show empathy for a patient. Your caring nature will shine through and take you far in the nursing world.

Everybody can tell a dedicated nurse as opposed to one who doesn't really want to be  taking care of people. Dedication will get you far in nursing.

The ability to communicate with doctors is key to nursing. Doctors are people of a different breed and not always easy to get along with. The ability to communicate, and knowledge in your field will get you far and will allow you to get along with even the most difficult doctors.

Knowledge is key in nursing and nursing is changing all the time. Keeping up with the latest information is imperative in nursing. A nurse must be able to preform the basic duties with expertize. A knowledgeable nurse is a keeper in the field.

The patient generally will have loads of questions. A good nurse doesn't know everything, but knows how to find the information that he/she doesn't know.

Learning a second language could help you excel in nursing, as not everyone speaks English and a nurse must have impeccable communication skills.

They say cleanliness is next to godliness and it is so true in the nursing profession. A good nurse is one that remembers to wash their hands before and after each patient, procedure and potty break.

Your bedside manner matters greatly, as no one likes a grumpy, grouchy or mean nurse. How many times have you been in the hospital and have had one of these nurses with attitudes? I would rather have one with a friendly, caring attitude. A patient can tell if a nurse enjoys her job and they always appreciate a caring, smiling nurse.

Nursing is a gratifying field to work in. Being a nurse takes a lot of dedication. You must love to take care of people and help them to recover from illness. If you keep up with the above, then you should have no trouble in this field of work.
