Valentines Gifts Ideas – Their Scope And History

Valentine's gifts ideas for men and women alike have changed immensely over the years but very few people know where the ideas first originated and why gifts were given on this particular day. It is believed that in the third century AD, Roman Emperor Claudius II, in an attempt to bolster his army forbade young men to marry but a holy man by the name of Valentine flouted the ban, performing marriages in secret. Unfortunately for him (but fortunately for romantic lovers around the world) he was executed on February the 14th in AD 270 in return or his defiance.

Thus, every day since then on 14th of February, millions across the world present their loved ones with romantic valentine's gifts such as flowers, chocolates, jewellery and other special gifts. This day is celebrated all over the world signifying love and romance.

Personalised Valentines Gifts

With the passing of time, people have felt the need to come up with more and more original ideas for gifts for their romantic partner. No longer is it enough just to give a card (often presented anonymously) or a single red rose; people have had to invent more imaginative ideas so that their intent is clear and the recipient knows just how much the other person thinks of them. Personalised valentines gifts are the answer; something with the recipients name on it is a fantastic idea, particularly something that will last for a very long time, such as jewellery or a painting.

Unusual Valentine's Gifts

Let’s be honest, these days you are not going to be successful in your romantic pitch unless you come up with a something original. It used to be that an unusual valentine's gift was just a bigger card or an unusual type of flower but men especially seemed to make some gross errors in this regard. Nowadays it is acceptable that a man or woman express their romantic intent and ‘keenness’ with the presentation of a more unusual gift such as a gadget for a man (as long as he has a smile on his face, you just know he’s going to make a romantic effort in future, right?) or a voucher for a spa day or other experience.

Flowers as Gifts

Flowers are by far the most preferred Valentine's gift. These could be any type and colour depending on the choice of the person who is receiving them but beware of particular colours or types; some of them have specific meaning. A big bunch of red roses (traditionally a dozen) is always a ‘safe’ and wonderful gift. But even  white or another colour of roses might still be liked. Don’t worry too much if you can’t afford a dozen roses, sometimes it is enough to buy just one; it’s the way you present the gift and the nature of your actions that ultimately determine the success of your romantic pitch.

Whatever method you ultimately choose or whatever valentine's gift idea you come up with, for the best chances of success make sure that it is unusual, personalised and memorable. Most of all, however, make sure that the gesture is truly romantic.
