Cover lettersare what your potential employer will see first; your resume second.  A cover letter is an initial introduction to you and your qualifications. In theletteryou are also stating why you would be a perfect candidate for the position. The cover letter should be so compelling that it will make the employer want to turn the page and read your resume.  In order for the employer to do so, thefontof your cover letter should be written in a readable font style. Presenting a well put together cover letter that is grammatically correct and legible should be of top priority.

Keeping the text in a cover letter in an easy to read format and font style is highly preferable.  Employers do not want struggle to read your writing.   Employers receive many cover letters and resumes on a day to day basis and do not want to spend time figuring out what you have written due to the unreadable font style.  In fact, if your potential employer cannot read your cover letter, you risk more of a chance of them discarding it.

Times New Romanis a great font for cover letters.  It is a simple printed style.  In fact, most teachers, at the high school and collegiate level ask their students towrite essaysand papers in this font style.  This font style is also used in publications such as newspapers and books.  Font styles, in thefontfamily which include Courier, Bookman or Garamond can also be suitable for cover letters. These types of fonts can be found in many computer word processing programs likeMicrosoft Word.

Choosing a cursive style, small style, or one with symbols will only do you a great disservice.  These types of styles are not readable or legible.  It is easy to think that writing in an out of the ordinary font style will get you noticed, as it could stand out from all the other cover letters that an employer may receive.  This is not the case.  Your employer could miss important information that you are trying to convey to them all because they cannot read it.  Giving yourself the best chance at new job or opportunity could be hindered because you chose an inappropriate font style. Keep in mind that you want to make a positive impression on your potential employer so they in turn call you back for a face to face interview.
