Water Pump Repair Signs Water Pump needs Replaced
Sometimes there will be no signs before a water pump breaks, but very often the water pump will start dripping coolant from the bearing seal at the front of the pump where it cannot be seen directly. There is a small hole located on the bottom of the water pump called a weep hole. The "weep hole" can start to drip if the water pump is going bad.
The water pump's job is to keep the engine cool however, if the seal breaks or leaks and the water drips out this will cause a vehicle to overheat. The next time you are driving down the street on a hot summer day and there is not any any cold air coming from the air condition be certain to check the water pump. Being observant and paying attention to any unusual noises coming from the car’s vents and looking for a wet engine can be great ways to identify if there is any leaking coolant. If this is the case, it’s time to take in your car’s water pump and get it replaced.
Another signal that the water pump is going bad can be related to the bearings. A bearing going bad can make a water pump fail suddenly or sometimes one will hear a grinding or whining squealing type of noise first which is related to the bearing on the water pump going bad. The best possible thing is to get this fixed as soon as possible as it is a significant part of a vehicle's engine running properly without a water pump an engine will not run. The water pump in your vehicle takes its power from the engine.
The water pump generally operates through a belt and pulley, but there are other water pumps that will operate with a gear and chain. The power that the water pump generates from the engine is transferred to a shaft on which there is an impeller. It is the impeller’s job to spin and circulate the coolant throughout your car. One can think of the impeller as being similar to that of a propeller making a boat or airplane move. When the shaft and impeller are put together, they will spin on a sealed bearing. One needs to be careful to pay attention because this sealed bearing is the part of the car’s water pump that will wear out eventually causing the entire water pump to be replaced if necessary.
