If there is anything I have learned in the past few years dealing with our economic downfall and having to coast the ever shrinking job market, it is that college is always a useful tool in life, however its sometimes not the most beneficial. Being a computer technician for 6 years now I have a good clientale base and make a fair earning, however until recently that was a thing of the past. I was one of the exceptions thats happening so often now-a-days. I had a great resume and skills to boot, however people were only looking for degrees. Here recently I had applied with a few job markets for technical contracts like Onforce, and Work Market, and through them I've had over $10,000 in free vocational training just for being a technician with them which in turn has turned more heads and helped me develop a better rapport with my clients and even gain quite a few new ones.
Some places like Dice and Solo Gig will also give discounts or links to free vocational training. In the end you may not have a degree, but you have detail specific training for what you want to do. Generally, people learn and retain more information of things they like doing, so if you are learning skills YOU want to learn, it will benefit you much more and will typically be much more inexpensive to have vocational training than going and spending the 10-50 thousand dollars a year at colleges like Texas Tech, Rice, or Yale. More businesses and educational boards are starting to offer vocational training because of the positive outcome of training someone what they want to be trained, how the business needs the work to be done and to top off giving their loyal workers skills that they can make a career out of. Of course, vocational training isnt the complete exception. A college degree does still count for a lot no matter what. College will help get you any job you set your eyes on. Vocational training is more for middle-upper middle class jobs, so as far as pay there are some downsides.
All-in-all vocational training is now the cheaper and more reliable method to guaranteeing you that job you wanted without being in debt forever.
