Sometimes donating something that is very expensive or rare is not the best option. EBay or other similar auction sites are great places to sell unwanted gifts. This is a great option if you live in a small town. You do not what the unique tool that you cousin bought you in Europe to go to waste but you do not want them to run across their gift in a second hand store either.
Suck it up and just bring it out when the gift giver visit. Every year millions of people receive hideous clothing and home goods. You can just not stand the idea of having that ugly knick knack staring at you every day but you don't want to hurt the gift givers feels so what do you do? The best thing to do is bring out those items rather they are clothing or home goods when that person visits. They will love seeing that you have their gift out. Sometimes it is easier to just appease someone. For example, if your mother-in-law insists on buying you floral print shirts you cannot stand it is best to just keep them around for when she visits.
Recycle the presents. It is perfectly okay to regift a present as long as it is not within the same group. If your coworker gave you board games at a gift exchange and you are not a board game person you can give them to say a family member or close friend as a gift but do not give them to another coworker at the same company. It is only acceptable to regift presents that are intact and still in the original wrapping.
