Unique and Personal Gifts for new Moms

From 3arf

This approach to choosing gifts for new moms calls for looking at several facts about the new moms, then finding gifts that make sense for them. When the baby will be a first child, the new mother has different needs...for everything...than the mother who has had two or three closely spaced children, where existing furniture and clothing will be handed down.

There are different ways that people are becoming parents, these days. There is the adoptive mother and the mother who is having a child later in life that will be much younger than any siblings. Those who are becoming the guardians, foster parents and others must also be considered.

Then there is the relationship with the new mom. If the gift giver is best friends, siblings or parents of the new mom, then the gifts will probably be much more substantial and will be easy to choose, because the needs and preferences of the new mom will already be known. Furniture, heirloom quality clothes and gifts, the breast pumps, huge layettes, start up kits, strollers, and carriers are examples of substantial gifts that close friends, grandparents and siblings would give. With so many choices these days, close relations and friends can find ways to choose the unique and personal versions of the necessities.

If the new mom is a more distant relative, a new friend or a work acquaintance, the best gifts are those that are for the baby! Each child deserves to have a scrapbook or permanent things from their early years. A gift certificate for a photo session, a beautiful photo album, an heirloom quality set of baby dishes and silverware, or a nice baby quilt are items that will have lasting importance in a particular child's life.

These gifts, oriented to the baby, are especially important when the baby is part of a larger family where the youngest is likely to not have the gifts and attention that the first child gets.

When the baby is a later stage baby, a foster child or in a guardianship relationship, it all may go back to the universal kind of gifts that a first time mother and baby would need. For close friends and family, these needs will be more well known and it will be easier to find out what each person can give. For more distant friends and family, there are gift certificates, cash, or payment cards will allow the mother some freedom to get what is needed when it is needed.

When in doubt, or when the relationship is not a very close one, a person cannot lose by giving a nice baby quilt, a photo album, a scrapbook, or some item that will have lasting importance or value to both the mother and the child, who will then have personal memoirs and heirlooms to pass on some day.
