Unique and Creative Holiday Gift Ideas for Seniors

From 3arf

What can you get the senior citizens on your list this holiday season? When purchasing gifts for older family members, the name of the game is "convenience." Likely, the seniors you're purchasing for have just about everything they need or want. But, there are unique gift baskets (or bags) you can put together that might make their lives just a little bit easier. The idea is to gather various supplies together so they can keep them all in one place (in the basket). You're not only giving them something useful, you're giving them a means of storing what you put in. Here are some examples:

For the coffee lovers in your family, how about creating a basket filled with a couple of mugs, some flavored coffee, and a coffee grinder? Coffee lovers often enjoy trying special blends, and variations on their favorite flavors. If the recipient loves stronger coffee, a French press would be welcomed.

If the seniors you're purchasing for like to read, pick up a couple of books by their favorite authors, then add bookmarks, a book light, or magnifying glass to make reading easier. If your reader likes to make notes when reading, you could put in a nice pen and a highlighter for just that purpose.

A stationary basket, filled with a roll of stamps, envelopes of various sizes, and a package of pens could come in handy. You could also add a personalized stamp or return address stickers.

Perhaps your senior enjoys crochet or knitting. For the stitchers, fill a basket with yarn, various hook and needle sizes, a carrying case, and stitch counter. There are several different quick reference books that illustrate various stitches and techniques, also. Rather than putting all of the needlework supplies in a basket, you could purchase a bag created specifically for crochet and knitting supplies.

For the creative senior, a sketchbook, nice colored pencils and a set of watercolors would be appropriate. For an extra touch, purchase a coffee table book filled with the work of his or her favorite artist or sculptor.

For the writer in the family, a leather bound notebook with nice paper is a lovely gift, along with a writing pen or quill to go with it. Many "note takers" like the portability of 3X5 cards. Purchase some that are made with quality card stock for them to carry with them, if they like. Also, a set of Moleskinne notebooks (they come three to a package) would be nice for the writer who has several writing projects going on at once.

Many times, it's the little things that people appreciate the most; items that a person wouldn't necessarily buy for themselves (such as nice pens, etc) are always enjoyed, and most of the time, are unexpected.
