Understanding the Impact of Respect and Ethics on your Career

From 3arf

The amount of respect that you have for others and the ethics that you demonstrate can have a great affect on your career. It is important to understand the role these have and how they can affect your employment.

The amount of respect you show others influences the amount of respect you receive. Respect is a two way street, and colleagues will feel poorly if they feel that you do not respect them. If you suffer from a lack of respect then your career can suffer from it.

For instance, if you are not respectful of your boss, even in subtle or under-the-surface ways, then he or she may be more likely to fire you and less likely to promote you. If you are not respectful of your co-workers and they do not like you, then you may not be as productive when you work together. This may stunt your career. Bosses like people who work well with others to produce a positive workflow. If your disrespectful attitude is slowing things down they will not be happy. You may be less likely to move ahead in your career if people do not want you to be there.

It is important to be respectful of everyone when you are working, even if you do not truly respect them on the inside. When you show respect to others, they will do so to you, and this more positive environment will lead to more productivity and hopefully a positive move in your career.

Some people feel like having a lack of ethics will allow them to get further in their careers. They may believe they can lie, cheat and steal their way up the corporate ladder. The truth is that these unethical behaviors will often catch up with the person and instead of giving them the career boost they had desired will backfire instead.

Imagine a situation in which a coworker came up with a great idea that the bosses will love. You know that you can present it to them first and get all of the credit. This may seem tempting, however if the other person can prove that you stole the idea, then you will be lucky not to get fired. Of course, a reference will be out of the question.

Other people can often spot someone without ethics. They may not want to work with you because they think that you will turn on them. Bosses do not want someone unethical because they may not believe they can trust you. Being ethical can earn you respect and help your career.

Your beliefs and actions can greatly impact your career. Consider each and every step you make as well as their consequences when making decisions.
