Christmas is a wonderful time of year, but it is often misunderstood. The spirit of Christmas needs to be understood in order for the special day to be properly celebrated. There are several ways that people can understand the concept of the Christmas spirit.
The Christmas spirit should be that God and family are the most important reasons for the Christmas day holiday. Many people are too caught up in what gifts they are going to receive as opposed to what the holiday is all about. The reason for Christmas goes back to the birth of Christ. The first institution in the Bible was the family, according to the book of Genesis, so Christ and family should be the most important part of Christmas. Christmas is Christ's day and His Word spends many chapters discussing family lineages because family is important. When people stress themselves about shopping and making sure everyone is satisfied, they are misunderstanding the Christmas spirit. The most important concepts of the Christmas spirit are Christ and family. Luke chapter two tells about the birth of Christ and the Bible makes mention of Jesus' family being present.
Christmas should be about others who are not as fortunate. Families who spend the special Christmas day with people in the hospital or the nursing home for example will always feel more thankful at the end of the day. Obviously, there should be some time where the family spends time together, but others who don't have as much should get some attention. The spirit of Christmas should not just center around self, but rather the needs of others. The best spirit of Christmas rests on those that give instead of receive.
The concept of the Christmas spirit should be understood as a time to refresh those that need refreshing. Many times, people have a rough year, and when Christmas comes, the holiday refreshes them and helps them to recharge their batteries for another year. Christmas often comes at the right time before people make bad decisions. The spirit of Christmas is often life saving and life changing just in time when people need that kind of moment in their lives. This is what the spirit of Christmas is all about.
The Christmas spirit is a happy spirit and every home should express this spirit of happiness and joy. This is why Jesus was born was to bring joy to the world, as the hymn is written. Therefore, that happy spirit and joyous attitude go hand in hand with the true spirit of Christmas.
Christmas is losing the real spirit for some and others are trying their best to make sure that this doesn't happen. In order to make this work, each family must decide that they are proactive in putting God first, then family, followed by others. The spirit also comes at just the right time for people who need it. Therefore, it is these reasons why this day is a great day of the year.
