Types of Jobs to Avoid in 2013
Jobs in the United States are currently in high demand. Millions of people are vying for positions due to high unemployment rates over the past several years. Some career paths, such as technology and healthcare, are seeing growth, while others are slowing down.
A recent study released by CareerCast.com, an employment website, ranked the 10 worst jobs of 2013. When making its list, CareerCast factored in several aspects including pay, environment, physical demands, stress and hiring outlook, according toThe Street.
These are perhaps some positions people might want to avoid if they are looking for secure employment:
• Top job fields to avoid in 2013
The top 10 worst jobs listed byCareerCast(in order) are: newspaper reporter, lumberjack, enlisted military personnel, actor, oil rig worker, dairy farmer, meter reader, mail carrier, roofer, and flight attendant.
• Long term jobs
Many people desire to enter a job that they can make a career of over the course of their lifetime. Some of the above jobs are occupations that were previously considered to be good career choices and highly coveted positions. However, as times change, so does the job market.
The printed newspaper is becoming obsolete as news continues to be broken on social media and by citizen journalists. Along with other aspects of the business model, these have put a damper on the news field. While there is still a need for reporters, there is also a lot of competition. As newspapers fold due to the economic pressures of a changing market, the jobs left will be more competitive as the demand for reporters falls.
Mail carriers are in a similar situation as digital communications are rapidly replacing mailed letters. The United States Postal Service'seconomic woeshave been widely publicized in recent years. The agency is possibly going to let go of far more workers than it plans to hire in the future.
• Dangerous and stressful jobs
Several of the jobs rated by CareerCast fall into the dangerous or stressful job category. These jobs: lumberjack, enlisted military personnel, oil rig worker roofer and flight attendant carry various types of pressure. While some of these jobs may be steady, others are more volatile in nature.
• Technology
Two of the occupations, meter reader and dairy farmer, are in job fields that are impacted by technology. Over the years meter readers are far less needed as remote and estimated readings take place. As for dairy farmers, much of the agriculture industry has gone automated. Unless one has the money to invest and plans to own a farm, there probably isn't much employment opportunity.
Over time some jobs rise to the top as the top jobs and others fall. While some industries aretimeless, over the decades, or in some cases centuries, others become obsolete. Additionally, many of the most stressful jobs out there pay far less than other types of occupations.
When considering employment options, it's usually a good idea to weigh out your interests with long-term sustainability. You want to ensure your chosen career is going to be a field that will be around for a while.
