Turbo Chargers and their Work

From 3arf

It's a well-known fact that the basic idea of the car's engine is to pump a mixture of fuel and air into the cylinder. Then, the explosion happens and the piston moves.

Auto companies were and will be always concerned in finding new techniques which help to improve the car's performance without increasing the fuel consumption too much. One of the most effective techniques is the turbo.

Everyone had certainly heard that word. But, what is the turbo? How does it work? Are there different types of the turbo? How effective is it? What are the main auto companies that use the turbo technique in their engines? Is it easy to install a turbo in a car that doesn't have it? Is that safe? Does that cost a lot? What is the supercharger? Is it similar to the turbocharger?

The turbo is basically a compressor that compresses air. It gets the power to do that by a fan that spins using the exhaust air flow. The result is that when the air is compressed, more air can be pumped into the cylinder. Thus, more powerful explosion occurs. That's why the piston moves faster and the engine becomes stronger.

Of course, there are different types of the turbo according to the size and manufacturing company. The efficiency of the turbo depends on its type and the engine in which you are installing the turbo. So, We can't say for instance that the turbo increases 60Hp. But, in all cases the turbo remains as an excellent way to make the ride much more active. A worth mentioning note is that air must be cool so as to obtain the biggest benefit of the turbo. Therefore, it's better to have an intercooler with the turbo.

The turbo is a favorite choice for some auto companies such as Porsche, Subaru and Saab. Also, many other companies use it in some engines like Mercedes, VW, Audi, Nissan and Cadillac.

Installing a turbo in a car that doesn't have it is not easy. But, it is not hard, too. You must pick a turbo that suits your car's engine. An experienced technician is highly recommended to handle the installment matter. If the turbo is installed correctly, we can say that it's safe. But, it may decrease the age of the engine. Unfortunately, it costs a lot. Turbo devices are not cheap.

Sometimes, we hear that a car is supercharged. The supercharger is typically as same as the turbo except that its fan spins using the movement of the engine belt instead of the exhaust air flow. It's widely used in the American cars more than the turbo which is used mainly in Japanese and European cars.
