Transforming Negative Energy in the Workplace
We all value honesty as a fundamental core value and in most workplaces we expect some level of honesty in our daily experience. However, even the most idealistic worker knows that there is bound to be a fair percentage of miscommunication, misinformation or even downright deception. Because information can often be power, the end result is a pervading feeling of distrust and the need to pin folks down on what they really are saying. Whether those feelings extend to both management and coworkers or just one individual in the organization, the repercussions always create a negative impact on the work environment.
How then can the average worker rise above this negativity and remain productive and satisfied in their position? The first step is to keep perspective. If you have gotten poor information from someone who is generally pretty accurate or grounded, don't fly off the handle and dismiss them as part of the opposition immediately. Think about their source and their motives. They may simply have gotten some poor information. Second, communicate openly. Stay professional and don't let your feelings get in the way of really listening to what they are trying to say. Talk it out with them and try to identify where they are coming from and why they feel the way they do. Finally, remember to be honest with yourself as well. Take a minute to think, without bias, about what they are saying. While what they are telling you may hurt your feelings, they may actually be talking with you to help you improve. No human is perfect, no matter how hard we try. Reminding yourself that it is all right to have areas to work on is an essential piece to evolving into a better person with a more positive outlook.
Misinterpretation and dishonesty will always exist in the workplace. However, employees do have resources to remain positive and focused on their work instead of spending significant amounts of time trying to protect themselves or combat others who are threatening to them. By simply working hard to communicate better, keep perspective and remain honest with themselves they can go a long way towards creating their own positive outlook within their organization.
