Toyota Avensis Recall
Japanese car manufacturer, Toyota has announced the recall of more than 1.5 million vehicles after it was discovered that they could contain a potential design flaw in the fuel system. The recall, which Toyota are keen to point out is voluntary on their part, affects certain models in the Avensis range of cars.
If a vehicle has the problem, there is the potential for cracks to appear in the fuel pipe which could lead to fuel leaks. The problem has been identified in both the 2 and 2.4 liter petrol versions of the Avensis, a car well renowned for its excellent build quality and reliability. Vehicles affected by this problem were built in the period from 2000 to 2008 crossing three generations of the vehicle.
The news is another body blow to Toyota who had to face up to a PR disaster in the early part of 2010 after having to recall hundreds of thousands of vehicles after a problem was discovered with the braking system. In that instance people lost their lives as a direct result of the Toyota problem. While there have been no reported injuries or accidents with the current problem, Toyota are again having to ensure the general public that their cars are safe and roadworthy.
Jon Williams, managing director of Toyota GB, said: 'We are committed to putting the customer first and have a total focus on the quality of our products. We will liaise with our customers to carry out the repair procedures as efficiently as possible, with minimal disruption.'
A message on theToyota UKwebsite states that the company will write to owners of affected vehicles shortly although in the meantime, concerned owners can enter their vehicle registration number or their Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) into the website to get instant information. If a vehicle does qualify for a recall, the owner will need to contact their local Toyota dealership in order to arrange a time for the repair work to be carried out. This work will be free of charge under Toyota's recall warranty.
No other model of Toyota car is affected by this recall notice, including the Avensis 1.8 petrol model and all diesel models. The problem does however exist in certain models of Lexus cars, the luxury division of the Toyota company. Lexus models affected are the 2006-07 GS300 and GS350, the 2006-09 IS 250 and the 2006-08 IS 350. There is no information about the recall on the Lexus website so if in doubt, give your local dealer a score to see if your vehicle is affected.
