Toyota has pretty much been in the news non-stop recently after a rash of scandals, recalls and quality woes struck the company once impervious to negative publicity. But, despite all the naysayers one fact remains: Toyota is here to stay and for good reason. They make excellent cars, trucks and SUVs.
2010 Toyota 4Runner
Still based on a trail ready truck chassis, the 2010 4Runner marked a return to styling form for the sometimes conservative Japanese manufacturer. Equipped in luxurious Limited trim, basic 4-cylinder form or with all the off-road gizmos, one thing is always certain: this SUV is built like a brick outhouse and has the macho styling to prove it. Bravo, Toyota, bravo.
2010 Lexus GX460
The luxurious Ying to the Toyota 4Runner’s Yang, this truck based lux-ute features ample seven passenger seating and the most stylish Lexus interior ever. The addition of an all-new more powerful and more fuel efficient 4.6 liter V8 is just icing on the cake. Granted, it was recently recalled after Consumer Reports deemed it “unsafe to drive” but anyone who buys a vehicle like this needs to realize it won’t handle like a sports car. Even adjustments to the stability Control can’t change the laws of physics.
2010 Toyota Prius
Despite the brake recall on this vehicle (a type of recall that happens to other manufacturers all the time yet was just poorly time for Toyota) the Prius still stands as the most reliable family car in North America according to Consumer Reports. Most reliable as in number one. Period.
2010 Lexus LS460h
Lexus invented the luxury hybrid and this sedan is the pinnacle that Mercedes and BMW are only now trying to emulate. You also just can’t go wrong with the bank vault solidity of a Lexus LS sedan. Even if it does scream Bank Manager.
2010 Toyota RAV4
In a crowded compact sport utility market the Toyota RAV4 not only stands as the originator of the species but also as one of the best. Toyota was also brilliant in selling the RAV4 in both economical 4 cylinder and powerful 6 cylinder forms. Do be aware that the V6 only gets one mile per gallon less in the combined EPA cycle so there is little point in getting the slightly overwhelmed 4.

This massive brute is the vehicle you would want for crossing the Kalahari Desert or for valeting on Rodeo Drive. For the entirety of Toyota’s history this vehicle has epitomized “Toyota cool.”

Although it might be slightly more expensive than some subcompact competitors no one else gives you the number of standard safety features with stability control, traction control, electronic brake force distribution and six airbags all featuring. An economical best buy for sure.
