Top 10 Excuses for not going to Work
You may love your job and actually enjoy going most days, however sometimes you might just feel the need to take a break from it. When people call in and excuse themselves from work, the pressure is on to make their reason as convincing as possible. "The dog ate my project" excuse does not cut it anymore, therefore you are forced to come up with something better. Some of the top excuses are real hummers:
- Death in the family. This excuse is questionable for moral reasons. If it is true, then it is not an excuse, it is a reason someone would not show up for work. When you lie about having a death in the family, it can actually come back to bite you if you are not prepared to show proof of the death like an obituary or memorial service card.
- Power outage. This excuse can be a viable one during bad weather or if you happen to live in a place with poor electrical wiring. When the power went out sometime during the night, your alarm clock was effected and therefore did not wake you in time for work. By the time you woke up, it was too late. The problem with the power outage excuse is if a coworker happens to live in the same area, and managed to be at work on time.
- Out of town visitor. The surprise visitor from out of town, whom you had to pick up from the airport. The plane was late and after losing track of time catching up on old times, you ended up being up all night. You cannot go in to work because you need to catch up some sleep, and plus you do not want to leave your visitor alone while you are at work. It is a good excuse and it does work.
- Physical pain. This excuse is even more effective if you show signs of having the aches or pains a couple of days before you call in sick. People with office jobs can pull this one off by having back, neck and/or shoulder pain. This is believable due to having to sit for long periods of time typing and/or talking on the phone.
- Car will not start. This is a good excuse in cold weather or you can further embellish the story by giving the reason that your interior light got left on all night. The only hole in this excuse is the somewhat unbelievable theory that you do not know anyone that could give you a ride to work. A the very least you should be able to take public transportation.
- Alarm did not go off. For some magic reason your alarm clock did not wake you up that morning. You could say that it is an old alarm clock and you are going to replace it on payday.
- Personal issues. This one is one of those excuses that works because it is an invasion of privacy for your boss to ask for more information. Personal issues can range from spouse problems, family troubles all the way to having diarrhea. Most employers will not bother to ask what is wrong.
- Time of the month. Women can use this excuse once in awhile. Not many male employers will want to know any details. Female employers might be sympathetic and not question the excuse. Be careful not to use this excuse twice in one month!
- Child is sick. Any company that employs people with children will understand that this does happen from time to time.
- Doctor appointment. A good excuse, unless it is not true and then you are required to bring in a doctor's note explaining the illness or problem.
It is understandable why sometimes a person just does not want to go to work and calls in with anexcuse. There can be a problem if they use the same excuse every time they call like having a cold. Employees should also take care when coming up with excuses, they do not want to get caught in a lie and possibly lose their credibility at work, or worse, lose their job. One day of relaxing at home is not worth losing your source of income.
