To Buy or Noy to Buy used Auto Parts – Yes
Used auto parts can be a cost effective alternative to parts house or OEM parts . Many parts can be obtained from local junk yards and auto salvages . The real trick is finding a functional part that costs less without putting in a lot of time looking for it . Many times you can spend more in time and money locating a used part than it would cost to just buy the new one . That depends on the part though . As a long time junk yard crawler I have found it beneficial to do my leg work on the phone . Most yards know exactly what they have and usually are more than happy to go check to see if they have a certain part or not .
Some yards even have a money back guarantee as to the functionality of a part , this is especially useful when purchasing used starters , alternators , engines , transmissions , and other electrical or moving parts . I highly recommend finding one of these yards when sourcing the previously mentioned types of parts . I also recommend avoiding those kinds of parts offered by individuals through the want adds . The exceptions to that rule are body parts , interior , tires , frames and like parts .
Outfits to be cautious of when purchasing used parts . There are some used parts companies out there that deal strictly in used parts . These companies buy wrecks , part them out and place them in inventory for resale . Sounds convenient doesn't it . It's also very expensive . I'll give you an example , several years ago I needed a harmonic damper for a 1984 Chevrolet blazer . I was real short on money so I decided to try sourcing a used one to get me by for the interim . I found one at a local used parts outfit about an hour away . By the time I drove up , purchased the part , and drove back i had about 65.00$ in the deal . About two days latter while looking through a popular after market parts catalogue I found the very part i needed brand new for 50.00$ . My point being to shop around and check all your available resources before purchasing .
In closing used parts are a very reasonable alternative when purchased with careful research . Many used parts still have many miles of service left in them . Just remember to shop smart and do the research for your self , you can save a lot off money . Remember to thouroughly check out the part before you purchase it , and obtain a written receipt along with a copy oftheir warranty disclaimer when availble . This way you have hard evidece should a problem arise . Happy hunting .
