Tips for becoming a Model
Modeling is a tough business, filled with a great amount of competition from many attractive people. There are things you can do to increase your chances of breaking into the business, however. Although thin and attractive people usually have an edge when it comes to modeling, agencies need different people for different campaigns, leaving room for people of all ages and sizes. The following tips can help anyone become a real working model.
Like most businesses, a good way to break into the modeling business is if you are fortunate enough to know somebody “on the inside.” If you have any contacts who work for a modeling agency or a company that is related to the business, then you should talk to him or her and see if he or she may be able to help you get started. He or she may be able to give you your first break. If your contact cannot get you jobs, he or she still may be able to help you by helping you find a good modeling agency. No matter what, they still should be able to give you tips and hints about the modeling industry and what your best course of action is.
Network as much as you can with these contacts. If you do not know someone personally, but your friend does, or even if a friend of a friend does, then see if you can somehow set up a meeting.
Get some good pictures taken of yourself. Many agencies and people who are looking for models want to see how photogenic you are. Get a head shot and some different poses to show off your assets.
Apply to modeling agencies. There are many modeling agencies that will be able to help you get jobs. You do need to be careful, however, because a lot of agencies charge you money. Some of them will make false promises in order to get clients and have you pay to take classes, get makeovers, etc. They do not actually come through with the promised jobs, however. Try to find someone that has a good reputation or somewhere that has a recommendation. Make sure that you only use an agency who will be able to get you jobs. Sometimes models get an independent agent instead of going through a big agency. Again you might know someone that could help. You can introduce yourself to different people. The more you try, the better your chances of becoming a working model.
