Tips for Creating a Scottish Themed Wedding

From 3arf

Regardless of whether you live in Scotland, have a Scottish heritage or simply like the Scottish style, it can be a fantastic theme for your wedding.  There are lots of different options to make your wedding stand out when using this theme for your wedding. Here are some tips for a Scottish themed wedding.

Clothes

One of the best known and popular clothing themes for aScottish wedding themeis tartan.  There are many varieties of tartan plaid available in numerous colors.  It is possible to have your bridesmaids wearing dresses entirely made of tartan or to use it as a trim or in the accessories, selecting the main colour from the tartan as the main color theme for the dresses.  Often, different tartans are linked to different Scottish families or ‘clans’. If you have Scottish heritage it is well worth looking up the tartan for your family so that there is an extra special link to your background throughout your wedding theme.

Kilts

It is traditional in Scotland for the men to wear kilts to special occasions, and what is more of an occasion than a wedding?  Either tartan or plain colors can be chosen and can be linked to the color scheme of the bridesmaids, flowers and décor for the wedding.  Kilts are often worn with a sporran and a kilt pin.  If you choose to hire the male outfits from a hire shop, then these items are usually included.

Food

The food is another way that Scotland can be incorporated into the theme for your wedding day. Scotland has some fantastic produce and some famous dishes that are associated with the country.  Haggis can make a fantastic starter or can be served in smaller portions as nibbles on a buffet.  Aberdeen Angus beef is a famous beef product from this fine country.  This could be the highlight of the main course, which can also be accompanied by seasonal vegetables.

Drinks

One of the most famous exports of Scotland is Scotch whisky.  This can be served either warm or cold, straight or with a mixer.  It is a wonderful drink to welcome guests into a wedding reception or to be served after the meal.  However, it isn’t the most ideal choice as a drink during the meal as many guests will prefer something more refreshing.

Music

The instrument that springs to mind when people think of Scotland is bagpipes. Traditionally, the piper will stand outside the church or wedding venue and play the bagpipes as the bride arrives and enters the church.  They will then strike up the music again when the bride and groom leave the church or venue following the wedding ceremony.  There are many pipers who will be willing to play at your wedding for a fee.
