Tips for Choosing a Housewarming Gift
If you are invited to a friend or family member’s housewarming party it is customary to take a gift to express your happiness for their successful move. Knowing what to give though can sometimes be a little tricky. Check out the following tips for choosing a housewarming gift listed below.
Consider their Life Stage
If the person is just striking out on their own and they are moving from living in a shared rental or even transitioning from living at home with their parents then they may need a lot of the basic things that make a house comfortable. You can buy them almost anything for around the house and be sure that they will find it useful. Kitchen or bath towels, a new toaster or even a set of drinking glasses may all be great gifts for someone who is just moving on their own. If however, the person is more established and is moving from one house to another it gets a little harder. You can give them something that is decorative or maybe pantry items in a nice package.
Do You Know their Tastes?
You should probably stay away from giving gifts that are too taste specific or gifts that need to be ostentatiously displayed unless you are very confident that you can choose something that will satisfy the homeowner’s tastes. Wall hangings are an example of something that may be a bit too taste specific to give as a gift but scented candles may be easier to choose if you know that the person will like them and use them.
A Gift Basket Can Be Neutral
A gift basket can be a great housewarming gift because it can be filled with home-made or store-bought gourmet items that are fairly neutral. All you need to know is if the recipient is a vegetarian or not and then you can choose some great pantry items to fill the basket. An accessory or two can round out the theme of the basket. For instance if your basket has crackers, gourmet cheeses and meats, you can also include a cutting board and a couple cheese spreaders to make the gift complete.
Think Outside the Box
A housewarming gift is usually something that can be used around the house, but it doesn’t have to be for inside the house. A great plant or a set of gardening tools may be a nice gift for someone who is moving from apartment living into a house with a yard. Also for someone who is moving in from out of town a membership for a neighboring health club or movie club can be a great gesture as well.
Housewarming gifts should be given from the heart. Think of the person you are getting the gift for and consider the tips above and you will surely be able to choose something that they will absolutely love.
