Things to Include in a Winter Emergency Kit
Most people don't think about needing an emergency winter car kit until it is too late. A good time to start thinking about it is before the temperatures start dropping. It isn't just accidents that cause people to die out there alone on an empty road. It is not being prepared for them. One way to be prepared is by having a winter car emergency kit. Think of it as a survival kit for winter driving.
When driving there are certain items you should have in your trunk already but many of us don't. The spare tire, a jack, tire iron, fix a flat just in case you can't get the lug nuts off. A cell phone is a priority and a charger. Flash light with fresh batteries, a map, first aid kit, flares and matches or a lighter.
The winter season just means we need to add some extra items for safety and survival. This could be for you, a family member, friend or a stranger. Some very important items are blankets. Blankets will keep you warm and they can keep an injured person from going into shock. Shock is one of the number one causes of people dying in car accidents. It is also a good idea to bring some extra clothes, boots, hand and feet warmers.
Be sure you have enough fresh water to last for 4-5 days. Keep protein rich snacks and food that won't go bad. You never know if you will be stranded for days or just a few hours. Some foods to include in your winter kit are peanuts, candy, fruit, vegetables, crackers, tuna, chicken. Just remember to purchase the ones that rip off so you don't need a can opener. Peanut butter and jelly works well on bread.
Some other things you may need are jumper cables, antifreeze, oil, starting fluid, a Flathead and a Philips screwdriver. You may also want to bring a tarp or plastic with some duct tape to keep you dry and warm if a window is broke. Depending on where you live you may need to bring chains for your tires or get studs put on your tires. This will help with traction especially going down hill or on ice.
If anyone takes medication, be sure to bring enough so they don't run out. Always keep them in their original prescription bottles too. Your winter emergency kit really depends on where you live and if you are going to places where the weather can get bad. Remember, being prepared can save your life, someone you love or possibly a stranger.
