Things everyone should know about Shopping in used Car Lots
Deciding to buy a used car is a wise decision, new cars depreciate in value as soon as they are driven out of the dealer showroom. However, there are things that everyone should know about shopping in used car lots.
- Make decisions before you even enter the used car lot *
Most people who are going to buy a used car already know what type of car they want before their arrival. Once that decision has been made you should have a budget and stick to it. Work out what realistic monthly payments you can afford. Don't let the dealer talk you in to spending a fortune and definitely don't let them persuade you in to a deal with higher payments. If you can't decide on just one model then choose at least three options that are similar types of cars.
- Shop around *
To find a good deal on a used car you'll have to be prepared to shop around. Going to the first place you come to and buying a used car is a mistake. If you find a car at one place you can even negotiate with other dealers in order to get the desired bargain.
- Do your research *
After finding what you think is a reasonable price look at the Kelly Blue Book price and other online auto sites. You want to be sure that you are paying a fair price even though you are buying a used car. Also research the history of the car by getting the VIN number, this will give you a lot of information before you buy. When looking online search for the vehicle you are thinking about buying. On certain auto sites you will find reviews on various car models from test drivers and owners.
- Check out the car before you buy *
This can be avoided if you buy a a certified used car that has passed a thorough inspection and is backed by a manufacturer's warranty. However, not everyone wants to pay the extra cost for this service and you can inspect the vehicle yourself. If you feel you have no expertise in this area you should ask a qualified mechanic to check out the car for you. You want to make sure the car is mechanically sound before you purchase a used vehicle.
- Test drive the vehicle *
Test drive the car preferably from a cold start as some cars are harder to start from a cold engine. Listen for any strange noises, make sure the engine sounds good and all the electrical equipment is in working order. Make sure the car is comfortable to drive and has a lot of cargo room if that is what you need. Does the car feel comfortable to drive? Do the brakes work accurately? Is it a good handling vehicle? Ask yourself these questions while test driving the vehicle.
Buying a used car can be a great experience if you follow these rules. Shop wisely when you go to a used car lot and don't let the dealer talk you in to a car that you really don't want to buy. Be aware of any scams that you think are going on, if something doesn't sound right, then it most likely isn't. A used car should be sound inside and out, it doesn't have to be perfect, but it should be in fair condition for the price. The best piece of advice when shopping for a used car is to keep your wits about you. Don't buy anything just because the dealer says it's a good deal.
