The most Notable Difference of Amateurs and Profesionals in any Field
Have you ever been watching someone do something and you realize that this isn't the best performance you have ever seen? I recall watching the Doritos commercials for the Super Bowl and noting how poor they seemed to be. I then learned that they were made by amateurs and not professionals. It all made sense then, and it shows the difference between professionals and amateurs.
The biggest difference between someone who does something professionally and doing something just for fun seems to be talent. However, that isn't the entire answer because someone who does something professionally might have people who nurture them, good connections and that might be why they are a pro instead of just playing in the rec league on Wednesday night.
To me, I think the biggest difference between a pro and a guy who does something for fun is the resources that they are given. While the golfer who just plays 9 holes once a month probably has no reason buying 500 dollar drivers, most of the time that guy can't even afford to pay 500 dollars for a driver. On top of that it might be that he has a real job and can't put in the tons of hours it takes to practice and pay for coaches and lessons.
It can be argued that passion and a will to want to be the best makes someone a professional, or that it is indeed talent that makes someone a true pro. However, it takes the time and skill of others to make you into what you are and very few people have the talent to simply make it because they show up one day and decide that they are going to own the competition.
Due to the fact that it takes time, coaching, and experience to become great, it would seem that you won't become all you can be without the resources being given to you to succeed. If you have a 40 dollar budget to make a movie, what are you going to make besides something with your camcorder? It would be impossible to make a movie like Avatar without the time and money given to James Cameron to make his movie.
We are not what we are without things being given to us. Regardless of how they are obtained, it stands to reason that you are nothing without having the resources to succeed. If that means moving up through hard work then so be it, but would you rather play baseball with a tree stick, or an actual bat fine tuned to hit home runs?
