The Importance of Knowing how to Resign Gracefully

From 3arf

Every job has its ups and downs but some jobs are simply put, intolerable. For those jobs it's important to know how to resign gracefully keeping as much dignity intact as possible. This will take some doing on the employee's part, but it can be done with patience and perseverance and a few wisely chosen words in the resignation letter.

Be tactful

Working with a difficult co worker is often cited as the number two reason for resigning from a job, second only behind working with a difficult boss. When handing in a resignation it's important to not make any mention of this situation, rather, make a point of stressing a new opportunity that simply can't be passed up. At some point in time this difficult boss or co worker will come up against their match and there's no reason to be that person. Keep dignity intact and don't force an issue simply to make a winner's point. Be graceful when handing in that resignation.

Be honest

Find another job first. That way when resigning it can be done gracefully when the resignation letter states “a new opportunity that simply can't be passed up”. Besides, the unemployment line is long and a difficult line to tow, find another job first even if it's only temporary. Jobs are always easier to find if one is already employed.

Be civil

Although it's tempting to tell that lousy boss or co worker off when walking out the door, don't do it. One never knows when they might need them as a reference for a future job. Be civil and polite and don't say anything that would burn that bridge if it can be helped.

Don't bad mouth

At the new place of employment a typical question is why someone left their former position. Again, as difficult as it may be, don't bad mouth the former employee's or boss, one never knows when one is talking to a relative or friend of that former employee or boss. Why start a feud or possibly jeopardize the new job if one doesn't need to?

It's very important to know how to resign gracefully and use it to the advantage of gaining a new position with better pay and better benefits. Stay calm, be tactful, be honest, be civil and don't bad mouth anyone from a former job. The job saved may just be the best job ever.
