The Importance of Enthusiasm in the Workplace
Enthusiasm for the work you do is obviously a positive thing, but not everyone is lucky enough to have a job they enjoy doing. It can be difficult to be enthusiastic about your job when you have to contend with angry customers all day long or spend hours phoning up people in order to try to sell them something. Not all jobs are exciting or glamorous; in fact, most involve rather mundane tasks being performed again and again. However, you have to earn money to be able to feed and clothe yourself, which is usually enough to keep you going into work every day.
In an ideal world, though, you would have a job that you can be enthusiastic about, as having a job you enjoy is likely to make you happier and less stressed than doing a job you loathe. Sometimes, it is possible to be enthusiastic about particular aspects of your job while hating others. For instance, you might get along well with your colleagues, but find that the nature of the job gets you down. You therefore have to focus on what you like about your job to stop yourself getting depressed about things, especially since you spend quite a significant proportion of your life at work.
You may have a job that you really have a passion for, as it is something you’ve wanted to do since you were a child and which enables you to put your strengths to good use. You might be good with people and find yourself in a role where you are able to help vulnerable members of society; you may be good with figures and have developed a career working in the financial sector; or you may be good with computers and spend most of the day working with them. Other people may not be able to understand why you are so enthusiastic about the work you do, but that doesn’t matter as long as you’re happy.
Everyone has their own strengths and weaknesses, likes and dislikes, so that what appeals to you may not appeal to other people. It can take awhile to find a job that you want to do or a firm that you actually want to work for, but it is worth taking time to look around and trying different things, so that eventually you can end up doing a job you want to do. Clearly, it is much easier to be enthusiastic in the workplace if you’re doing something that gives you pleasure.
