Thanksgiving Celebrated

From 3arf

For many the true significance of the Thanksgiving holiday is family, food and friends. Time to spend together. It is a time to be thankful for all we have in our lives. We all know the stories they tell us when we are young. Of pilgrims and Indians coming together to celebrate newly formed bonds of friendship with a plentiful feast. The pilgrims did not know much of the new land and the Native Americans took pity on them and decided to teach them how and what to plant to survive. The pilgrims were so thankful that they gathered together every year with the Natives to indulge in food and friends.

Today many Americans celebrate this holiday in much the same way our ancestors did many years ago. Many of us fly across the country just to spend time with our closest friends and our dearest family. Almost every kitchens are alive with the smells of fantastic culinary creations. The homes are abuzz with the sounds of old friends and new loves coming to together to enjoy a meal. On the fourth Thursday of every November we gather at our tables where the turkey is the centerpiece.

When dinner is done for many there is football and for others plans for Black Friday are already being made. Soon everything has been taken away and then comes the pie. There are so many to choose from! Many enjoy pumpkin or sweet potato. Others gobble up pecan or apple. Yet more love cherry or peach. Yes dessert is often just as magnificent as the extravagant meal that precedes it.

It is difficult to put into words the feelings that come to us when we are with the ones we love. There are mothers seeing their children for the first time since they went away to college. Games of football are played by the male of the species both young and old. Naps are a common thing to see. The turkey puts many out better than the best sedatives. There are also those that loosen their belts or unsnap a button in order to fit more amazing food into their stomachs.

.   As things wind down we don our coats and scarves and mittens and return home. The attention now turns to preparing for Christmas.

I do not believe it possible to fit all the different meanings and importance of Thanksgiving into one article. Anyone you speak with will have a very unique meaning of Thanksgiving. To try to explain the holiday is futile as it does not hold the significance for some that it does for others. We make new memories every November that we will carry for our entire lives. The closest I cancome to identify the meaning is to say Thanksgiving is what it is to each and every American.
