Temp Jobs why the Negative Stigma
Temp jobs, like most jobs, have good and bad aspects. However, for some odd reason, temp jobs have a negative stigma attached to them. It is sometimes said that people doing temporary work can be unreliable, flighty or they don't have a sense of what they really want to do for a career. This, of course, is not always the case. Temp jobs can provide a variety of benefits for those involved.
For starters, temp jobs offer experience. In order to land most full-time positions, experience in the certain field is necessary. So if you want to get started in a specific field, you can do so with a temporary job. By putting the experience that you have gained from temporary work on a resume, you will increase your attractiveness to potential employers. Some people get in trouble with this though, so be very careful. Experience is a good thing, but too many jobs is a bad thing. After working on a few temp jobs in a certain field, it is time to start looking for something full-time. Too many jobs on a resume that are temporary will worry employers, as they may think you are "jumpy" and cannot stay in one place.
Another great aspect of a temporary position is the ability to have "an in" with a company. By being placed at a company temporarily, you have a fantastic opportunity to show that company what great work you can do. Hiring someone full-time can be a risk for a company because staff is such a large investment. By hiring temps, the company does not need to invest nearly as much money and commitment for the work, making employees less of a risk. By showing your temporary employer that you work well and are reliable, you have a good chance of being hired full-time after your temporary assignment.
Finally, the obvious benefit to working a temporary job is the money! In a tough economic environment, it can be much easier to find a temporary job than something permanent. The jobs are generally fairly compensated and are a consistent source of income for the duration of the work. If you are in with a good, respectable staffing company, your pay has the chance to rise by doing well in other jobs.
Overall a temp job does not deserve the bad reputation that could sometimes come with it. A temporary job can offer great experience in certain fields, it can provide an opportunity with a certain company, and it can be a source of income. Be sure, however, not to rely too much on temp jobs; you could become stuck in a cycle of temporary work. A temp job is perfect for someone looking for something permanent in the future.
