Recognizing the right time to take the next step in your relationship and get married is a very personal decision between the two people involved.
Although there is no right or wrong answer to the amount of time you should date someone before deciding to bring the relationship to engagement status, there are questions you should be asking yourself as well as your partner before making this lifelong decision.
Do you share similar interests and values? Although it isn't always romantic to discuss such topics as who will cook and who will do laundry? or who will pay which bill? However these are important everyday issues that must be resolved. Everyday conflicts, especially money, unfortunately can turn marital bliss' into a potential marital nightmare' or worse, divorce. Be open and honest to one another regarding every issue from the beginning and nothing should come as a complete shock.
Do you two speak openly about your future together? If you are swapping your future children's names, dreaming about the vacation you will take together in 20 years and discussing which city you will eventually end up in, it's safe to say you are both confident in the lasting power of your relationship.
Do your family and friends approve? Believe it or not friends and family see things we don't. The term love is blind' didn't come from nowhere. We often only want to see the good in those we fall in love with. If the ones closest to us don't feel the same way we do about the person you want to someday call husband or wife, you may have to start asking yourself if this person is right for you. If the feelings are mutual across many friends and family members this is a definite bad sign and something you should explore further.
If you are sure about your relationship and know you both can withstand all of the tests of time, it's time for YOU to choose when to ask the special question. Just remember the way you propose isn't as important as who you choose to propose to. Nothing you plan in life can always be perfect. Just go with the plan you create for that special time and go with whatever comes your way. Your future fiance may not see this coming so be prepared for the plans to change.
