Taking Time to Give thanks at Thanksgiving
Taking time to give thanks often gets lost in the hustle and bustle of holiday planning. If families plan ahead and make sure they have everything that is needed before, Thanksgiving can be celebrated the way the Pilgrims originally did. Having a meal plan ahead of time is one way to keep from getting caught without the things you need for your special meal. Making a list is one way to start. Write down everything you plan to have and leave space for the ingredients that you will need to prepare each food item. If you are having the traditional turkey, be sure to shop early. The turkey will be fine in the freezer as long as you take it out a couple of days ahead and place it in the refrigerator. Some larger turkeys may need three days to thaw. Make sure you list all the trimmings. For instance, if you make stuffing, be sure you list everything you need for your recipe. If you buy early, you will save yourself a lot of time.
Make sure you list everything no matter how small. If you need cherries, pineapple, and brown sugar for your ham, make sure to put it on the list so you will not have to run out at the last minute to buy it. Shop early for all of your holiday needs, whether it is something for your meal planning or decorations. Most department stores start putting Thanksgiving items out a couple of months early. You can beat the rush and have your decorations ready to put up weeks before the big day. If you are wanting a centerpiece that has real flowers and plants, order it a week or two early. Make sure you tell the florist not to deliver it until the day before the holiday. This will insure that it stays fresh for your gathering.
Make sure you make a list of people who are attending so that you can be sure you have enough of everything. Invite someone who is less fortunate than yourself. After all, that is one important way to show how thankful you are. Make sure you call your guests ahead of time. If they are bringing side dishes or desserts, make sure you discuss this with them as a reminder. Let everyone know what time the meal is suppose to start. It would be a nice gesture to send out an invitation that shows them what time to be there. This is another way to insure that everyone arrives on time. It can also help keep the others from having to wait to eat their Thanksgiving dinner.
Last, but not least, remember to give thanks for all that you have. Be thankful for the many blessings that your family has been given in the last year. It is important to remember to be thankful. Allow your guests to tell what they are thankful for, as well. After all, this is what Thanksgiving is all about.
