Suv a they Worth it
SUVs, or sport utilities vehicles, have become a staple of the modern American family. While small town America seems to be cornering the market, major cities and their suburbs have come to embrace this style of vehicle as well. Yes, fuel mileage is obviously going to be worse than the average car.
The modern SUV more than makes up for it. Picture a family outing of 7 people, now with a car owner they're going to need two vehicles to get where they're going. If you owned a full size SUV this would not be a problem as most of them can accommodate 8 large adults with room enough for comfort, plus animals, supplies, and whatever else you want to take along.
Lets do a comparison of vehicles, On the one side we have cars. They are fuel efficient, present an easy parking profile, and are lower in insurance premiums. They are also lower to the ground, presenting an easy target for other vehicles. They don't hold much and you can barely fit 5 adults in one.
SUVs on the other hand; while they don't get 30 mpg, many newer models are capable of 20 mpg. The diesel equipped models can get upwards of 25 mpg with minor modifications that are legal and inexpensive.
They can tow a very large trailer safely. They hold the world if you pack smartly and they are very safe. My family owns a 1996 k2500 4x4 Suburban and I will not consider letting my children ride in anything less.
Cars are cheaper, there is no denying that fact, but a diesel equipped SUV, well maintained, can give upwards of 500,000 miles of service nearly hassle free. Show me a car that can make 200,000 miles and I'll show you the way to the scrap yard, because quite simply, almost every component on that car will be worn out.
The same cannot be said of modern SUVs. Since they are built with heavy loads in mind, all components are heavy duty compared to a car. Couple that with modern manufacturing and you can achieve very long service life. The real key, of course, is proper maintenance and inspections.
In closing, the modern SUV has come a long way from the Power wagons and suburban carryalls of the past. It has worked its way into our perceptions and our hearts as the go to family vehicle. Just as the station wagon and the minivan had their day in the sun, so now does the SUV bask in the lime light.
Do I think SUVs are worth it? Dollar for dollar, I'll have twice the money in the bank from vehicle savings versus the typical car owner. Even if it cost me twice that of another form of transportation , my children are more than worth the expense.
