Surviving the Graveyard Shift
Graveyard shifts are horrible. Many people dread having to work a night shift. It disrupts the sleep and eating pattern of the individual. These shifts are potent and can make or break a person. Being a health care professional, I know all too well the effects of the graveyard shift. This shift has many downsides, indeed to it. People doing graveyard shifts often do not want to do them, but have no choice in the matter.
Graveyard shifts can also be very busy, and there is always skeleton staff available on these shifts. The graveyard shift employee will have to work extra hard during these shifts, and this can be very draining. The employee needs to see to it that he/she is properly looked after, and gets adequate sleep, while on the shift. Many employees will suffer from the lack of sleep and feel very tired in the moring. Employees also need to maintain a very positive state of mind, in order to survive the worst parts of the graveyard shift. Many employees also will start to become afraid, when all lights are out and the workplace is in total darkness. It is in the best interests of the employee to make as many friends who also work the graveyard shift. One way of surving this shift is to talk to people whilst everything is quiet. Employees also need to think about the positives of this shift. There are no superiors or supervisors to push everyone around, and the environment therefore should be very relaxed in most places. Another positive is the fact that if there are two or more people on the shift, one person can take a sleep break and come back to cover the rest of the shift. This will work quite well, and employees will have a lot of spare time on their hands as well. Graveyard shifts can be frustrating to employees. Many employees will love the idea of doing other things during this time than having to go to work, and suffer. There are so many things that people can do whilst at home. Employees must also pack extra food for this shift, and healthy food like fruits and vegetables would come in very handy.
Employees can also bring along their own entertainment. Cellphones can be brought around and employees can go onto the Internet, and facebook people. Employees can also get up to things that they would not normally get up to when the managers are around during the daytime. This will motivate more employees to work the graveyard shifts as there is very little workstress, and everyone just carries on normally.
