Successful Teachers
Do you want t be a teacher or a good teacher? If you're going to be a teacher, you need more than just the degree establishing that you have learned the subject matter of which you wish to teach. Abilities needed to teach are:
1. Love and enthusiasm for teaching
2. Patience
3. Skill in presenting your subject matter in such a way that makes it more easily understood
4. Determination to be the best you can be as a teacher
5. Love of teaching the age group you choose to teach
6. Tolerance for those that do not have the natural ability to learn the subject which you love and the ability to help these individuals
grasp enough of the subject to pass.
No matter how much knowledge a person has, they will not be an effective teacher unless they know how to teach that subject successfully to their students. Learning how to teach is much more than knowing your subject. It is a truly talented teacher that can learn how to teach. It is recommended that anyone that wants to go into the field of teaching take courses on teaching techniques before beginning their career.
All of us remember those classes in school where we simply could not stay awake or find any interest. It was not always because of our lack of interest in the course but the teacher's inability to effectively teach the subject and keep us interested. There is nothing worse than to have this type of teacher.
I can recall my Algebra II class where I just couldn't grasp the subject. I loved Algebra but the teacher just couldn't explain it where I could understand it. One of my fellow class mates would sit down and explain it to me and it was like a light bulb would come on because he made the explanation so simple; without the help of this classmate I probably would have flunked Algebra II. The teacher was very intelligent but he didn't know how to teach.
Over the years I have seen this failure in training classes I attended to learn laws and regulations I needed in order to do my job. It soon was obvious that there some instructors that knew their subject but simply did not know how to present it to our class. I was asked to become one of these teachers and decided that before I would do any teaching that I would first take some teacher training instruction courses to learn techniques to make my teaching effective. It was one of the smartest things I ever did in my job because these teaching techniques helped me in many other areas of my life where I was trying to get a point across to someone.
A teacher is a very important part of the lives of our children as they are with them a good part of their day. These teachers are responsible for helping them learn knowledge they will need to further their success in life and become a productive adults. If they are going to play such an important part in the lives of our children, they should be prepared to be able to be good and effective teachers that know how to present a subject. All the six abilities listed above are a must in order for a teacher to be successful.
