Subsitute teaching salary varies from state to state and on if you are a certified substitute teacher. If you are a certified substitute teacher it means that you have a state issued teaching certificate and you will be at the top of the substitute list. Certified substitute teachers will get the long term substitute jobs and a higher pay than a non-certified substitute teacher. Even if a non-certified teacher gets a long term substitute job, in Georgia, a non-certified sub has to take a day off every 10 days. This is so they are not required to pay you benefits.
Substitute pay can increase depending on the local SPLOST tax and if you are called regularly. If you are called regulary, your pay based on a 30-day period will be much higher than one who has not had many sub jobs. Each year teachers, adminstrators, and substitutes tend to get a pay raise. Though it is not much, a paycheck each month is worthwhile. Just think of it as extra income.
To increase your pay, I would suggest going back to school to get your certification. Taking the GACE test and taking continuing education classes to increase your knowledge will help you associate better with the students and teachers. Taking a substitute teacher class is required of subs to learn the do's and don't's of subbing.
The closer you live to the city, the higher the pay for a substitute will be. Subs are in demand in the inner city. Doing careful research and observation of the local papers to see who has jury duty can increase your sub jobs thus increasing your pay. Also you can check your local RESA, which is the schools research on continuing education classes, can help you target certain schools and teachers. When you see they need to be out, you can offer your services.
Substitute teaching is a good part time job for people who want to supplement their time. Men are often more in demand because of the sterotype that a man can control students with their authoritative voice. So men, are often chosen first after the certified teachers.
Depending on the school, the secretary can be your best friend. She, often, is the teacher's helper in finding a sub. If she knows who you are and that you are reliable, you will be called. Thus, increasing your end of the month pay. Middle school and high school teachers are required to find their own subs. So knowing your teachers in these schools can help you get the days in that you need for a good paycheck.
Remember, the key to getting a good paycheck is
1) be available
2) be on time
3) it helps to have a degree
4) get to know your teachers
5) let the secretary know you are available
6) include all your contact numbers
7) never ever say you cannot work/ say you are already booked. This sounds better than "I don't want to work for you."
Again, increasing your pay depends on the above. The more good qualities you have, the more valuable you are to the teacher.
