Substitute Teacher in Michigan

From 3arf

Usually, to become a substitute teacher in Michigan, you must have a teaching certification. The best way to apply for substitute teaching jobs is to contact the school district you wish to teach in about openings. Go to the school districts website to find the contact information, and apply for listed jobs. If there are no jobs posted, send an e-mail or letter of introduction, along with your resume.

However, According to Michigan.gov, the states official websites, a person with at least 90 credits from an accredited university or college may become a substitute teacher, provided that the district has obtained the proper permits and requirements. This ensures that children in every school district get a proper education and do not suffer from a teacher shortage in the area.

There are three such permits available in the state of Michigan. To get these permits, the school district must first prove that they have tried to get a teacher with full qualifications.

The Substitute Permit allows a non-certified teacher to teach on a day to day basis , and is not valid for assignments of more than 90 days. The Full Year Permit allows a person to be employed in a regular assignment that lasts in the same classroom for more than 90 days. An applicant for this position must have at least a Bachelors degree and can only teach non-core subjects if the person has no teaching related education. The Emergency Permit is only issued under circumstances in which the lack of teachers will deprive children of an education.  To qualify under this permit, the applicant must hold at least a Bachelors degree or higher in the area to be taught or have completed 90 plus credit hours in an approved teacher education program.

The best way to find available positions in this area is to contact the school districts themselves, or use a major job search website such as indeed.com.  The best opportunities for people with no teaching background will most likely be found in large, low funded school districts, such as Detroit, which qualify for the emergency permit. Many of the better school districts are full of teachers already, yet the poorer school districts of Michigan are as of this writing suffering from lack of teachers. This could be a good opportunity to earn extra money while giving back to society, while also giving your résumé a boost.
