Mini is introducing a Coupe model for 2011 aimed at letting drivers enjoy a similar handling flair to that of a go-kart. The Mini Coupe, which sits 29mm lower than a standard Mini, has a stepped rear end in the classic style of a Gran Turismo, a sleek silhouette and a ‘helmet roof’.

Mini, part of the BMW Group, says the two-seater compact sports car is geared towards maximising driving fun, promising high levels of agility, quality and equipment. The coupe’s distinctive appearance can be matched with the most powerful four-cylinder petrol and diesel engines in the Mini range, offering 90kW/122hp in the Cooper Coupe, 105kW/143hp in the Cooper SD Coupe, 135kW/184hp in the Cooper S Coupe and a mighty 155kW/211hp in the John Cooper Works Coupe. A six-speed manual gearbox is fitted as standard, while a six-speed automatic box is optional for the Cooper Coupe, the Cooper SD Coupe and the Cooper S Coupe.

To enhance the driving experience further, the front-wheel-drive models feature electric power steering, a DSC (Dynamic Stability Control) system and powerful brakes. In addition, to up the enjoyment even more, there is an integral roof spoiler and an active rear spoiler which optimises airflow at higher speeds. The rear spoiler extends automatically when the car reaches 50mph. DTC (Dynamic Traction Control) with EDLC (Electronic Differential Lock Control) is standard on the John Cooper Works Coupe and optional on the other models.

The 1.6-litre Mini Cooper Coupe, which has fully variable valve management based on the BMW Group’s Valvetronic technology, goes from a standstill to 62mph in nine seconds and has a top speed of 127mph. Its average fuel consumption according to the European Union standard is 52.3mpg (5.4 litres per 100 kilometres) and its CO2 emissions figure is 127g/km.

The 2.0-litre Mini Cooper SD Coupe is a turbo-diesel model with an aluminium crankcase, common-rail injection and variable turbine geometry. The car’s acceleration figure for 0–62mph is 7.9 seconds and it offers a top speed of 134mph. The model’s average fuel consumption is 65.7mpg (4.3 litres per 100 kilometres) and itsCO2 emissions figure is 114g/km.

The 1.6-litre Mini Cooper S Coupe has a twin-scroll turbocharger, direct injection and fully variable valve management. This model can reach 62mph from a standing start in just 6.9 seconds and has a top speed of 143mph. Its average fuel consumption is 48.7mpg (5.8 litres per 100 kilometres) and it has aCO2 emissions figure of 136g/km.

And, finally, the 1.6-litre Mini John Cooper Works Coupe has a twin-scroll turbocharger and direct injection, plus many tweaks imported directly from motorsport. This thoroughbred athlete can roar from 0mph to 62mph in 6.4 seconds and can reach a top speed of 149mph. It has average fuel consumption of 39.8mpg (7.1 litres per 100 kilometres) and a CO2 emissions figure of 165g/km.
