Strategies for getting yourself Promoted

From 3arf

I want to be the boss! Don't we all, but for the majority this is not a possibility. However, in most firms there does exist the opportunity of promotion. The problem is how to get yourself into a position that will ensure that promotion comes your way. Amongst others, there are five steps that I would recommend, although these are listed in no particular order of value as they have equal importance.

1. Learning.

They say that you never stop learning and certainly in a work environment this is very true, especially if you want to seek promotion. Whether it is inside or outside of the workplace, if you want to progress your career, you should be prepared to undertake as many course and training sessions as are necessary to ensure that you are both up to date with current developments in your chosen industry and that you are learning what fulfilling roles at a higher level entail. For example, if you want to progress into management, you will need to attend management and leadership training sessions. At the same time you should be seeking to acquire qualifications in this field.

Learning is an ongoing process throughout your career and your dedication to this process will lead to the reward of promotion.

2. Teamwork

Teamwork is another important aspect of achieving career improvement. You must learn to work as a team and also encourage others to do the same. If it is noticed that this is your approach, there is no doubt that your employers will keep you name in mind when vacancies at higher levels become available. This is especially the case if they see that you are using your communication skills to help to create a team effort, getting others to join in for a common goal.

Teamwork also means helping others, even if this is not part of your job role. This could manifest itself in you taking a new employee under your wing and helping them to adapt to the firms culture and rules, or helping out with tasks where others have not got the time to complete them, even if that other person is in a higher position than yourself.

3. Initiative

Almost without fail employers enjoy seeing their staff displaying initiative. If you think of an idea or a system that you think may work better than the existing one, do not be afraid to go to your superior and explain you idea to them. If it helps in the way that you think it might, then you will be noticed. Even if your initiative is only helping a fellow worker at your own level, sooner or later the effort you are putting in on behalf of others will be noticed. That notice will eventually lead to your name being put forward for advancement.

4. Dedication

Employers love people who are committed and dedicated to their role and the company they work for. In reality, if you cannot feel like this then you should not be working for the firm. However, you should let that dedication shine through. Show your superiors that you are dedicated to the business and its objectives, namely to helping it become a success. For with that dedication and the firm's success and interest at heart, your success will follow.

5. Determination

There may be times during you career with a firm when others are promoted above you and you may not understand the reason why. But do not get downhearted about this and, more importantly, do not let if affect you attitude to the firm or the job role. Be more determined that the next time it will be you and, through that determination, the promotion you seek will eventually come you way.

To get promoted, if that is your wish, you need to keep learning, work with the team. Show initiative and dedication and be determined to succeed.
