Steps to becoming a Building Contractor
One of the first steps to becoming a building contractor is to learn as much as possible about the trade of construction. Jobs are always available as helpers or journeymen in the various associated areas of construction work. Taking the time to actually work in the different trades is one of the best ways to familiarize yourself with the field of contracting.Different areas require different amounts of time but a few months will usually be sufficient to learn the basics of most. That does not mean one can become a master of a trade in such a short time, however using this time wisely can reveal a wealth of information.During this time of working for others or "apprenticeship" maintaining a good credit rating is a must. Do everything possible to establish good credit or to repair a less than favorable credit rating. Having good credit is essential to success as a building contractor. This is also a good time to meet people and build relationships with those who are established in the business and may be helpful for future work.Different codes and laws govern all areas of construction. Codes are usually nationwide, while laws though similar will vary from locality to locality. The national code books are available in hard copy and on the Internet. There are also numerous other books available to help the future contractor become familiar with the terms and practices of the business. While some will find the code books overwhelming, there is no need to be discouraged. Many schools and technical colleges offer courses that teach the codes at a reasonable price. These courses are very helpful and the time and money for them is well spent.
Some schools will offer courses that specialize in teaching how to pass the test for a building contractor's license. When one of these courses has been successfully completed, the actual taking of the contractor's exam is usually successful.Trying to become a building contractor without applying for a license is a shortcut that is tempting, but can lead to cancellation of jobs, and fines by local municipalities. A contractor's license will open the door to credit from local suppliers and lending institutions.
Insurance companies are often hesitant to deal with or insure unlicensed contractors. A license also opens up the opportunity to bid for government contracts. In most municipalities, a license is required to obtain a building permit.Don't expect to become a building contractor overnight, however if the proper steps are followed, and one uses their time wisely, it will pass quickly. Be patient and diligent and the day will come when having a building contractor's license becomes a reality.
